Under the mask...
Change the way you think about narcissism forever

It seems like everyone is talking about narcissism these days!
In a sea of information (and misinformation), how is an ethical, science-based clinician to make sense of narcissism?
Can we bring understanding and compassion to people who have been hurt or abused by a narcissistic person and to people struggling with narcissism in themselves?
It's time to take the mask off narcissism
INTRODUCING...
UNMASKING NARCISSISM
Get the low down on narcissism from a diagnosed narcissist and a clinical psychologist who specialises in issues of narcissism
Turn off the misinformation tap and find out
- Where the concept of narcissism comes from
- What narcissism is
- How pathological/problematic narcissism might present
- If narcissists can change

1. History of Narcissism
From the Greek myth of Narcissus (and his lover, Echo), through Freud (who desexualised the concept of narcissism - seriously), to contemporary understandings of narcissism we talk about how the concept of narcissism has evolved over time.

2. Pathological Narcissism
When does narcissism become pathological? What is Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD)?
What is it like to live with NPD?

3. Narcissism and self-esteem regulation
Fluctuating self-esteem seems to be a core feature of pathological narcissism. We explore how people with NPD can shift rapidly from dizzying heights of grandiosity to crushing shame and a sense of utter worthlessness.

4. Understanding the "narcissist"
We draw on a schema therapy model to understand Jacob's narcissism and how it impacts his life.

5. Echo, understanding our response to narcissism
We talk about understanding the dynamics of narcissistic relationships and use a schema model to make sense of the interaction between Ruth Ann and Jacob. We hope this will serve as a framework for understanding dynamics in relationships which are impacted by issues of narcissism.

6. Helpful strategies for all therapists
